Xavier Makes Leaders

Xavier University’s School of Nursing and Department of Criminal Justice now offer a dual degree program resulting in both a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) degree. This 100% online program is geared towards professionals looking to bring nursing and healthcare expertise into criminal justice settings - and vice versa - for the betterment of both systems. The program prepares students for non-traditional leadership roles that encompass educational, consultative and managerial functions in the healthcare or criminal justice systems.

This integrated degree program was developed to complement the forensics track of Xavier University’s MSN program. Core courses in the MSN program focus on three major themes: critical systematic inquiry, professional and personal development, and management of information and resources in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. In addition to advanced training in core nursing and criminal justice principles, the dual degree program focuses on preparing graduates to interface with healthcare and criminal justice systems, apply forensic nursing principles to community health and safety, identify and prevent abuse in vulnerable populations, collect and preserve evidence in cases of death or trauma and act as an expert witness or legal consultant.

The Preparation You Need to Advance

This 100% online dual degree program results in two separate degrees - a Master of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice. The MSN program prepares students to pursue leadership roles in healthcare, designing and establishing delivery services in response to healthcare policy changes. The MSCJ program is a multidisciplinary program that prepares students to address the complex criminal justice issues that arise in a free society.

Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared to become leaders in the fields of forensic nursing, healthcare, and criminal justice - three fields that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted will show significant job growth over the next decade. In addition to traditional nursing and criminal justice career paths, graduates of this program are prepared to pursue various high-demand careers that blend these two areas of expertise including:

  • Legal nursing consultant/expert witness
  • Forensic psychiatric nurse
  • Sexual assault nurse examiner
  • Nurse coroner
  • Forensic nursing death examiner
